Brian Stabler
Time at Durham
Brian Stabler attended Bede College from 1964 to 1967 before emigrating to America to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where earned a masters and a Ph.D. in 1971. While at Bede, Brian joined the Boat Club (stroke), ran cross country, and played squash. A member of the College choir, he was elected to the College JCR administration and served on numerous intercollegiate committees.
Professional life
In Chapel Hill, after a postdoctoral fellowship in clinical psychology, Brian was appointed assistant professor in 1972 in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics in the School of Medicine, where he eventually became full Professor. In his clinical and academic work he is a noted thought leader in health psychology and behavioral medicine, earning recognition as Fellow in both the Society of Behavioral Medicine and in the American Psychological Association, from which he received the Distinguished Service Award in 1992.
Social and Family life
Active in his community Brian is a Rotarian, a member of the Episcopal Church, and past director of numerous philanthropic organizations such as Ronald McDonald House, The Family House at UNC Hospitals and the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union. He has two grown children, lives in Chapel Hill with his wife Laura, and occasionally plays golf.
